Why a spec sheet is worth more than a part number

The problem

Most RFQs don't arrive as a clean part number. They arrive as a customer's spec, in whatever form the customer wrote it: a thread callout with a typo, a drawing with a tolerance in the margin, a competitor's part number that only sort of matches what you carry. Someone on your team has to read that, decide what it actually means, and translate it into something your system can price.

That translation is invisible work. It doesn't show up on a quote as a line item, but it's where most of the time on a multi-line RFQ actually goes, and it's the first place a good quote turns into a slow one or a wrong one.

It's also knowledge that lives in one or two people's heads. When they're out, or when they retire, the RFQ still needs reading, just slower and with more mistakes.
